The story behind Declassified Coaching
In 2022, I reached a point where something had to change.
I was leading strategic initiatives, traveling constantly, saying yes to every opportunity, and working longer hours than I care to admit. I believed I was doing everything I was supposed to do.
Then I was passed over for promotion again.
I remember thinking, enough.
Not because I wanted to walk away from my career, but because I realized I couldn't keep approaching it the same way and expect a different outcome.
So I started paying attention: to promotion discussions, hiring decisions, succession planning, and leadership development. I watched who advanced, who didn't, and I started asking different questions than I had earlier in my career.
One pattern kept repeating itself.
Technical expertise, strong performance, and a long list of accomplishments might get you an interview for a senior-level role. They don't actually get you the promotion.
I realized that leadership decisions were shaped by many other factors: influence, visibility, relationships, organizational needs, timing, and trust. The people who consistently advanced understood those dynamics and managed their careers with the same intention they brought to their work.
Once I saw it, I couldn't unsee it.
Today, I see friends, colleagues, and clients wrestling with many of the same challenges.
They're taking on more responsibility without more authority.
They're told they're "high potential" but continue to wait for the next opportunity.
They're convinced they need to do more, learn more, or work harder to earn the promotion they've already demonstrated they're capable of.
Those conversations are why I created Declassified Coaching.
I wanted to create the kind of support I wish I'd had earlier in my own career: someone who understood both the technical world I worked in and the leadership challenges I was trying to navigate.
My career is still evolving. I'm still leading teams, building influence, and thinking about what's next.
That's one of the reasons coaching is so important to me: the conversations I have with clients continue to shape the way I think about my own career, just as my experiences continue to shape the way I coach.
